Use Profile to Control Size and Form
(In accordance with the ASME Y14.5-2009 standard)

In the previous tip we used a Composite Profile of a Surface to control the location and orientation of an irregular feature of size relative to datums. Since the upper segment of the feature control frame references datums A, B and C, the feature is located and oriented within a 0.4 tolerance zone relative to the datums. This tip will focus on the lower segment. The tolerance of 0.1in the lower segment, has no datum references, and subsequently controls size and form only. As illustrated in the figure below, the form of the hex, angles of the hex shape and flatness of the individual surfaces must be held within the tolerance of 0.1. This 0.1 tolerance zone is allowed to “float” (translate and or rotate) within the larger location zone of 0.4.
